Robert Coy
Retrospective
About the Artist and Exhibition:
Curated by Robert Coy’s son Schina Coy-Perillo, this Retrospective Exhibition was the first of it’s kind since the artist passed away in 1999. Robert Coy was a Lorne based artist whose work became iconic to the place from the 70s to today. The exhibition was put together by Schina and the gallery reaching out to the community to lend Robert Coy works that they owned. The response was beautiful, with up to 100 people lending us their precious and often sentimental pieces.
Robert Coy’s idiosyncratic and often immediately recognisable handwriting and sign writing was unobtrusively entwined with the aesthetic of the town’s local businesses throughout the 70s, 80s and 90s - from logos, shop front signage to menus - and his hand can still be seen today. He also ran a small gallery ‘Lorne Art Works’ at 80 Mountjoy Parade for a period and many of the people who lent us works for the exhibition recalled buying their pieces from Bob there.
