No Picnic

About the artist and exhibtion:

EASTER, LORNE, 2021, THE SUN IS SHINING BETTER THAN IT EVER DID DURING SUMMER JUST PASSED: SMOKING HOT, SCHOOL HOLIDAYS, FEELS LIKE THOUSANDS ON THE BEACH AND NO ONE SEEMS TO NOTICE THE PANDEMIC WE ARE IN THE MIDST OF..... HEAVEN RIGHT? MONDAY 19 APRIL: TERM 2 FIRES UP AND IT FEELS LIKE THE TOWN HAS EMPTIED DRAMATICALLY. THE WEATHER HAS TURNED A SHARP 180 DEGREES, IT’S BLEAK, COLD, RAINING AND I’M WALKING WITH MY KIDS WHO ARE DRESSED HEAD TO TOE IN WET WEATHER GEAR, THEIR GUMBOOTS FILLED TO THE BRIM. IT WAS THIS EXTREME MOMENT OF CONTRAST THAT PROVIDED THE IMPETUS FOR ‘NO PICNIC’. THIS BODY OF WORK IS INTERESTED IN WHAT IT MEANS TO LIVE IN A TOWN WITH A TRANSIENT/FLUCTUATING/FRAGILE? POPULATION AND ECONOMY....FROM BOOM TO BUST WITH THE CHANGING WEATHER?........ WHAT IT MEANS TO LIVE IN A COVETED HOLIDAY DESTINATION; A PLACE PEOPLE ESCAPE TO, ENJOY, UTILISE, BUT EITHER BY CHOICE OR NECESSITY, OFTEN DO NOT OR CANNOT LIVE IN PERMANENTLY.... AND HOW THESE ELEMENTS APPLY PRESSURE, OR CERTAINLY INFLUENCE, ALL ASPECTS OF LIFE HERE. THE ENVIRONMENT, COMMUNITY, BELONGING, FIRST NATIONS RIGHTS AND CONNECTIONS, HOUSING, STAFFING, OPERATING, INDUSTRY, EDUCATION, HEALTHCARE, EMPLOYMENT, COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT & ENGAGEMENT, THE ARTS AND DIVERSITY, IN EVERY SENSE OF THE WORD, ARE IMPACTED. AS AN OUTSIDER (ACCLIMATISED TO EXISTING IN CITIES) WITH AN INSIDER EXPERIENCE OF LIFE AND WORK IN LORNE, I AM MADE ANXIOUS BY THIS UNFAMILIAR UNCERTAINTY.....THE UNCERTAINTY OF HOW A PLACE LIKE THIS OPERATES AND SUSTAINS ITSELF....I WONDER IF THE WORD/CONCEPT OF ‘ENTROPY’ WOULD BE HELPFUL IN DESCRIBING MY FEELINGS HERE? ‘NO PICNIC’ REPRESENTS THESE QUESTIONS AND IDEAS.
